How Tinley Park Homeowners Can Lower Their Heating Bills Today

lower heating billsWith the heating season already underway in Chicagoland, you’re dreading the steep heating bills that accompany the long Lake Michigan winter. Heating your home, however, doesn’t have to break your budget or require any major sacrifice in comfort. Read on to find out how to lower heating bills this winter.

How to Lower Heating Bills

  • Replace worn weatherstripping or install it where it’s missing. Seven to 12 percent of your home’s heated air may be escaping through leaky windows and doors. Fresh weatherstripping on movable parts of doors and windows with caulk applied around frames and other stationary fixtures will stop that heat loss. This means your heating equipment won’t have to work as hard.
  • Seal other air leaks to the outside. Many homes in the Chicago area have significant air leakage that permits heat to escape in the winter and get inside in the summer. Common locations for leaks are where pipes, vents or electrical lines are routed through the walls or places where walls meet the foundation. Use caulk to seal leaks, saving expanding spray foam for larger gaps.
  • Add attic insulation. In most homes, a substantial amount of heat is lost in the attic. Proper insulation and air sealing can help reduce this heat loss. Check that the attic hatch is insulated and sealed.
  • Install a programmable thermostat. This will allow you to set energy-saving temperatures based on your schedule. When nobody’s home, the house doesn’t need to be fully heated.
  • Buy an electric space heater. If your family tends to hang out in one spot during the evening, such as the family room, use a portable space heater in that room. This will allow you to turn down the thermostat a few degrees for the whole house. These days, portable electric heaters are much more efficient than they used to be.
