Duct Sealing is the No. 1 Energy Saving Home Improvement
Homeowners hoping to cut their utility bills while doing a little good for the environment need only to look at their air conditioning system’s duct work for inspiration. Sealing air ducts can increase the efficiency of home cooling and heating systems by as much as 20 percent, according to the U.S. government’s Energy Star program.
Not convinced getting this job tackled will help? In a recent article, the New York Times said duct sealing is the No. 1 home improvement project for energy savings.
Why is it Important?
Air conditioning ducts are like veins in the circulatory system. They carry conditioned air throughout a home, helping keep comfort levels high. All too often, however, ducts are improperly sealed, leading conditioned air to spill out into attic space, the basement and in other unoccupied areas. When leaks are present, utility bills go up, HVAC systems work harder and homeowners may notice that some rooms are more difficult to make comfortable than others. Properly sealing ducts stops the loss of cooled air into attic, basement and crawl spaces and ensures it gets into occupied rooms where it belongs.
Aerosealing Delivers Results
One of the most effective ways to seal ducts and ensure an increase in efficiency is to use the Aeroseal process to close leaks in existing ductwork. This cutting-edge solution is recommended by the U.S. Department of Energy and is more affordable than many homeowners realize. The average cost is between $950 to $1,400, depending on the size of the home and amount of ductwork involved in the job.
How it Works
The Aeroseal process was developed by the University of California’s Indoor Environment Program with financial support from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. It involves three simple steps that take up to six hours to complete:
- All of a home’s vents and registers are sealed so air can be forced through the system to readily identify problem spots.
- Once leaks are pinpointed, a special sealant is injected into the system to close them.
- A computerized device is then used to ensure that all leaks have been sealed before a job is considered complete.
