Geography

Located about 35 miles southwest of Chicago in Will County, Mokena covers 8.89 square miles. The Rock Island District Metra rail system provides two commuter rail stations in Mokena and connects the village to downtown Chicago. Other major transportation routes are I-80 and U.S. Routes 45 and 30 (Lincoln Highway.)

History of Mokena

In the early 1830s, the McGoveny family, along with several other families, established a settlement on the banks of Hickory Creek. They named their little town Chelsea. When the Rock Island Railroad laid track less than one mile north of Chelsea, growth focused on the rail stop, Mokena. A school and several churches were soon built, and by the late 1870s, Mokena boasted a variety of businesses, including blacksmith, wagon and butcher shops, hotels, general stores and seven saloons.

In 1841, John McGoveny acquired land and began to farm. In the 1920s, the farm passed into the hands of heirs Fred and Carrie Yunker. In 1958, Edwin Yunker formed the Mokena Community Park District and transferred the farm to the park district. The McGoveny-Yunker Farmstead, built in the early 1860s by Elijah McGoveny, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Demographics

Mokena’s population grew from 903 in 1950 to 18,740 in 2010. The village has 6,585 housing units; the median value of owner-occupied homes is $326,300.

The census shows the town has 2,125 business firms. The largest occupation segment is management or business, followed by sales and office occupations. Median household income is $105,000. The median commute time is 35 minutes.

There are five public and three private elementary, middle and junior high schools in Mokena. There are three public high schools. Higher education needs are met through Joliet Junior College, the nation’s first public community college, and through Rasmussen College, which also has an online school. Thirty-six percent of residents hold a bachelor’s degree or higher.

Climate

Mokena’s climate is classed as moderate. Average low temperatures in January dip to 20 degrees; July highs reach 84 degrees. Average precipitation is 3.24 inches in January and 4.67 inches in July.

For shopping options, Mokena residents enjoy the Mokena Marketplace located near the intersection of Wolf Road and U.S. 30. The Marketplace is anchored by J.C. Penney and Meijer and is the largest of the several shopping malls in Mokena. Dining options range from national chains such as Applebee’s to local diners such as EggCetera Cafe. The Mokena Community Public Library holds over 85,000 books and 300 periodicals, as well as 18 local area newspapers. The Mokena Community Park District is a serene place to enjoy the outdoors. Basketball, tennis, disc golfing, sand volleyball, roller hockey and a skate park are some of the activities available, in addition to hiking and picnicking. The Willow Run Country Club features public golf.
